Discover Arzana: A Charming Town Rich in History and Nature in Sardinia
Located in the province of Nuoro, in Sardinia, Arzana is an enchanting Italian municipality with a population of around 2420 inhabitants. Nestled in the barbaric subregion of Ogliastra, the town sprawls between 670 and 800 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Ogliastra plain and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Gulf of Arbatax.
The mountainous terrain of Arzana is characterized by lush forests of holm oak and cork oak, typical of the inland areas of the Ogliastra province. Here stands majestically the highest peak in Sardinia: Punta La Marmora, reaching an altitude of 1834 meters. The cool climate provides cold winters and mild summers, with frequent precipitation that sometimes turns into snow.
Arzana boasts a rich history dating back to the Nuragic age when it was inhabited by the Iliensi tribes. The village of Ruinas, in the heart of Gennargentu, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, along with the ruins of Bidda Silisè and Cortes de Maceddu.

- In medieval times, Arzana was a village belonging to the Judicate of Cagliari within the curatorship of Ogliastra.
- After various dominations and changes of ownership, in 1839, the town became an autonomous municipality governed by a mayor and a city council.
Over centuries, Arzana has witnessed territorial conflicts and administrative changes until becoming the capital of Mandamento including several neighboring municipalities. Famous for being the birthplace of painter Stanis Dessy and politician Anselmo Contu, the town preserves ancient traditions and a strong cultural identity.
The linguistic environment reflects the variety of Campidanese Ogliastrino with Barbaricine influences. The municipal territory also includes Accettori administrative island offering a splendid natural setting across an area of 27.22 km².
Accessibility to Arzana is ensured by Mandas-Arbatax railway line operated by ARST used for Trenino Verde tourist service. The railway stations within town serve as strategic points to explore surrounding areas throughout the year.
