Discover Fonni, the highest municipality in Sardinia located at 1000 meters above sea level, known for its pastoral charm.
Just like many other mountain villages in Sardinia, Fonni boasts compact urban nuclei, comprised of ancient stone houses spanning one or two floors. The oldest neighborhoods still showcase the typical wooden shingle roofs.
It is believed that the oldest core of Fonni grew around the church of San Giovanni Battista in the early Middle Ages, followed by the districts of Ghinio and Su Piggiu on the northeast side of the mountain.
In the 17th century, another significant nucleus developed around the Franciscan convent, which greatly influenced Fonni’s evolution. It became the main hub of Barbàgia di Ollolai, surpassing other towns in the region.
Due to its altitude, Fonni stands out as Sardinia’s only ski resort with facilities reaching over 1800 meters on Spada and Bruncu Spina peaks.
The charming murals adorning the village streets depict scenes of daily life and field work. Don’t miss visiting notable buildings like the late Gothic church of San Giovanni Battista and the basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Martyrs.
Fonni’s territory holds a millennia-old history, inhabited since pre-Nuragic times with Nuragic and Roman evidence such as Sarabensis mansio.
Fonni is also renowned for its traditional sweets like Savoiardi biscuits, and for hosting the annual Palio dei Comuni, a festival taking place every first Sunday of August at the municipal racecourse.
