Lanusei’s history traces back to ancient times, being inhabited since prehistoric periods.
Lanusei is renowned for its strong agricultural tradition and has also become an important tourist destination, thanks to its crystal-clear sea and hiking opportunities offered by the surrounding mountains.
In the heart of the town stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, dating back to the 16th century and recently restored. The cathedral houses works by painter Mario Delitala, commemorated by the local art high school.
Within Lanusei’s urban area, several fountains that were once vital for residents’ daily water supply can be found. Some of these include:
- Funtanedda at Niu Jossu, located near the railway bridge;
- Su Au at Niu Susu;
- Pelandrìa at Barigau;
- Mesu ‘Idda in the homonymous locality.
Stretching across the surrounding hills is the communal forest of Seleni, accessible via a beautiful 6 km route along State Road 198 towards Gairo. Alongside the forest are numerous tourist settlements, with a Nuragic village nestled within, featuring ruins of a nuraghe, several huts, and two Giants’ Tombs spaced 80 meters apart, dating back to the middle and late Bronze Age (15th-12th century BC).
