Since the Nuragic era, Romana has been inhabited due to the presence of ancient nuraghi in the area. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the giudicato of Torres and the curatoria of Caputabbas. Later on, it came under the rule of the Doria family and then the Aragonese. In 1839, with the abolition of the feudal system, it was redeemed by Brunengo from the county of Monteleone.
Situated on a rocky plateau made up of volcanic and limestone rocks, Romana boasts stunning karst landscapes. The Temo river flows through the municipal territory and flows into an artificial lake near Monteleone.

According to ISTAT data, as of December 31, 2009, the foreign population residing in Romana consisted of 15 people mainly from Morocco. The variant of Sardinian spoken in Romana is northern Logudorese.
