Discover Tergu, an agricultural gem in northern Sardinia
Tergu, located in northern Sardinia just a short distance from the coast and Castelsardo, is a picturesque agricultural village with around 600 inhabitants. The village features a small central nucleus and numerous houses scattered in a fertile basin.
Traditions and spirituality: the Lunissanti ritual
- Tergu shares with Castelsardo, only 10 km away, the evocative Lunissanti ritual. It is a procession that takes place on the Monday before Easter, during which the brotherhoods and the faithful walk along the road connecting the two villages.
- The procession starts from Santa Maria degli Angeli in Castelsardo, passes through Lu Bagnu, and reaches Nostra Signora di Tergu, illuminated by lit torches.
Ancient history: the Benedictine abbey of Tergu
- The imposing church of Tergu dates back to the second half of the 11th century and was expanded in the following century when it became a Benedictine abbey.
- Considered one of Sardinia’s most important complexes, the abbey of Tergu directly controlled about ten monasteries. Over the centuries, it underwent various architectural transformations, transitioning from Romanesque to Gothic and Baroque styles.
Art and archaeology in the surrounding countryside
- In the surrounding areas of Tergu, you can admire around fifteen nuraghes, remnants of the ancient Nuragic civilization that once inhabited the island.
- Don’t miss out on the megalithic fortress of Mount Elias, already frequented in Roman times for its strategic importance.
