Myrtle is a shrub typical of the Mediterranean scrubland. Its berries are harvested in December when they are ripe and used to create a sweet, intensely fragrant red-purple liquor. This liqueur is best enjoyed after a meal, but its unique characteristics may be lost if served very cold.
