Barrali

Explore Barrali, a charming Italian municipality nestled in the province of South Sardinia, boasting a population of 1127 inhabitants. Located in the picturesque region of Trexenta, Barrali covers an area of 11.46 km² and is home to over 1100 people known locally as barrabesus.

The village is framed by the majestic Mount Uda, standing at 370 meters high, which hosts a vast pine forest spanning approximately 300 hectares. From the summit of Mount Uda, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama: hills, mountains, and the sea merge into a natural spectacle like no other.

Barrali is strategically located at the crossroads of three important areas in South Sardinia: it borders Donori in Parteòlla, Sant’Andrea Frius and Ortacesus in Trexenta, and Samatzai in Campidano. This privileged position has brought economic and social benefits to the local community.

  • The etymological origin of Barrali may derive from the cultivation of pergola vineyards practiced in the area.
  • Historical studies confirm human presence in Barrali since the Middle Neolithic period, around 4,700 BC, with numerous Nuragic remains testifying to ancient settlements in the area.
  • In the medieval period, Barrali was part of the Judicate of Cagliari and was included in the curatorship of Dolia.

Barrali boasts a rich history linked to its resurgence after challenging periods such as the bubonic plague epidemic of 1348. The community has always shown resilience and determination in overcoming adversity, rebuilding the village and creating institutions like Monte Granatico to support the local economy.

Today, Barrali stands out for its agri-food and wine economy, with a strong economic impact thanks to its proximity to Cagliari. Economic diversification in recent decades has led to the growth of local SMEs focused on niche crops and the production of fine wines.

Discover Barrali’s historical and natural beauties by strolling through its ancient cobbled streets or taking part in traditional festivities that enliven the village throughout the year. An authentic destination not to be missed in Sardinia!
