Explore Desulo: The Heart of Winemaking in Sardinia

Desulo, also known as Dèsulu in Sardinian, is a charming Italian municipality located in the province of Nuoro, in Sardinia. Situated at an altitude ranging from 830 to 1000 meters above sea level, Desulo is part of Mandrolisai, a region rich in wine-related traditions.

  • Desulo is divided into three picturesque districts: Issiria, Ovolaccio, and Asuai. These neighborhoods were separate until the construction of the Desulo-Fonni road and later merged during a period of construction growth in the ’60s and ’70s.
  • The origins of the name “Desulo” are shrouded in etymological mystery. Some sources suggest a derivation from “exile” or “exilium,” linking the name to a group of Christians exiled from Calmedia (now Bosa).
  • The medieval territory of Desulo was part of the Judicate of Arborea and later came under Aragonese rule. Today, Desulo is renowned for its ancient winemaking traditions and wine culture.

Desulo boasts a rich enological history that dates back to the Judicate of Arborea. The historic center, with its charming schist stone houses, preserves intact glimpses of a glorious past linked to wine production.

The surrounding area offers unique tourist attractions such as Sardinia’s tallest nuraghe at ”Ura ‘e Sole,” the giant’s tomb Sa Sedda ‘e s’ena, and Occile’s domus de janas. Moreover, pristine woods and forests like Girgini make Desulo an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts.

  • The festival “La Montagna Produce” celebrates local typical products and centuries-old wine-related traditions since 1991. During the event, the Montanaru literary prize is awarded to Sardinian poets who exalt the beauty of the region through their works.
  • Desulo actively strives to preserve ancient traditions like sheep transhumance and keep alive remnants of the area’s enological past.

Overlooking breathtaking panoramas, mountain villages like Asuai in Desulo offer an authentic glimpse into traditional Sardinian life. With a vibrant and welcoming population, Asuai is renowned for its vineyards among the highest on the island.
