Discover Laerru: the hidden gem of Anglona
Nestled in the province of Sassari, Laerru is an Italian town with a rich history dating back centuries. With its 902 inhabitants, it stands as a charming jewel in the heart of Anglona, a region brimming with traditions and culture intertwined with the world of wine.
The very name of Laerru has ancient origins, likely stemming from the Latin word alaternus, meaning ‘related to holly trees,’ which are typical evergreen shrubs in the area. This place was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological traces dating back to the Lower Paleolithic, pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods up to Roman times.
In the Middle Ages, Laerru was part of the Judicate of Torres, within the curatorship of Anglona. After various dominations, in the 18th century, the town was included in the principality of Anglona under the lordship of Pimentel and later Tellez-Giron d’Alcantara. Only in 1839, with the abolition of feudalism, did Laerru regain its autonomy.
The Northern Logudorese Sardinian dialect spoken in Laerru further enriches its unique cultural identity. Additionally, the town is served by a railway station along the historic Sassari-Tempio-Palau railway line used until 1997 for public transport and then dedicated to exclusive tourist trips linked to the charming ‘Green Train.’
