Explore the history of Senis, a captivating Sardinian municipality nestled in the province of Oristano.
Located in Sardinia, Senis boasts a rich tradition that dates back to the pre-Nuragic era up to the present day, with archaeological evidence revealing ancient Nuragic and Roman settlements.
During the Middle Ages, Senis was part of the Judicate of Arborea and the curatorship of Parte Valenza, with a defensive castle built on Funtana Menta hill to protect the village until the 13th century.
Following the fall of the judicate in 1420, control passed to the Aragonese who established a barony with various lords and barons. One of the first was Luigi Ludovico Pontos, appointed directly by King Alfonso V the Magnanimous.
- Francesco Carbonell acquired the fiefdom in 1421
- Pietro Joffrè became the first Baron in 1432
- The abolition of the feudal system occurred in 1839
In this area, you can find eight nuraghes and the remains of a 17th-century baronial park, tangible evidence of this place’s rich history.
The Sardinian dialect spoken in Senis is Western Campidanese, further enriching the local culture with its linguistic nuances.
