Delve into the ancient roots of Soleminis showcased by the intriguing archaeological sites of Facc’e ‘Idda, Is Calitas, and Cuccuru Cresia Arta.
Established since the 11th century, during the Judicature era, the municipality was part of the Judicate of Cagliari within the Parteolla curatorship. Despite political upheavals that saw it under Arborea’s rule and later under Pisa’s jurisdiction, Soleminis was eventually acquired in 1637 by Francesco Vico for thirty thousand lire. The land was inherited by Vico’s nephew who initiated a village repopulation project.
Unfortunately, a devastating plague epidemic struck the island in 1652 causing a sharp demographic decline. Only through granted privileges to residents and attracting new settlers did the center regain life and prosperity.
- Special mention goes to the Mont’ Arrubiu Regional Park, a protected natural area managed by the Region of Sardinia.
- Official language: Italian; spoken Sardinian variant: Western Campidanese.
Soleminis boasts a strong agro-pastoral tradition enriched by poultry farming and primary cultivation of grapes followed by olives. Among the most renowned wineries are Pili Wineries, famous for producing exquisite wines.
The municipality is served by Soleminis railway station along the Cagliari-Isili line. ARST trains connect this picturesque location to neighboring cities like Monserrato and Isili.
