Tempio Pausania (SS)

Tempio Pausania

Discover the Charm of Tempio Pausania, a picturesque town located in the province of Sassari, with a population of around 15,000 residents. Nestled in Gallura, at the foot of Mount Limbara at an altitude of approximately 600 meters, Tempio Pausania is truly enchanting.

From 2005 to 2016, Tempio served as the capital of the former province of Olbia-Tempio alongside Olbia. The territory of Tempio Pausania is characterized by forests and springs nestled within the granite massif of Limbara, giving the landscape a unique allure.

The historic center of Tempio Pausania is renowned for its widespread use of granite in architectural structures, earning it the nickname “City of Stone.” The squares and tree-lined avenues lend the historic center a captivating and charming atmosphere.

As an episcopal seat, Tempio Pausania likely derives its name from the ancient diocese of Phausania. The city attracts hiking enthusiasts, mushroom foragers, and nature lovers due to its surrounding forests, springs, and mountains.

The local economy traditionally thrives on cork and granite production but also boasts fine wines like Moscato and Vermentino. Tempio Pausania is also famous for its renowned carnival, one of the most significant events of the year that draws thousands of visitors from all over Sardinia.

Even in winter, Tempio exudes its charm with occasional snow blanketing the streets between February and March. Among the city’s main attractions is the eighteenth-century palace belonging to the Marquis of Villamarina in Gallura Square, currently housing the curia. Adjacent stands the thirteenth-century Cathedral of St. Peter Apostle.

A must-visit is Faber Square: dedicated to Fabrizio De Andrè, a singer-songwriter deeply connected to Tempio where he resided for an extended period at Agnata Estate. Today, this estate hosts a splendid Agriturismo managed by his family.
