Wine: Mirto Pilloni | Liquore di Mirto di Sardegna
Cellar: Silvio Carta
Sardinian Myrtle Liqueur: A deep intense dark brown color with violet and bright reflections. This unique liqueur from Sardinia offers a myriad of scents. Alongside the intense myrtle aroma, you can sense hints of Mediterranean scrubland, aromatic herbs, laurel, sage, and jammy plums. Upon tasting, these aromas blend into an elegant and enveloping myrtle embrace that dominates the palate. The mouth is subdued by vegetal notes in a refined sweet-bitter tug-of-war leading to a rightfully dry finish rich in Mediterranean echoes.
A Glimpse into History: Elio’s fascination with his family’s roots in Baratili San Pietro, where he was born and raised, was sparked at a young age. Enthralled by tales of past times, he often found himself lost between reality and fantasy. The winter of 1939 brought harsh cold and food scarcity.
- The inhabitants of Bartali San Pietro were struggling, but those in the surrounding villages faced even greater hardships.
- By late December, hunger drove them to gather myrtle berries for sustenance or trade.
- Eager to preserve the berries longer, Elio’s grandmother attempted to soak them in water resulting in a concoction that went unappreciated.
The Birth of Myrtle Liqueur: Witnessing this culinary experiment led by his grandmother laid the foundation for Elio’s creation of Pilloni myrtle liqueur. Following a historical snippet from their family legacy, he replicated the process meticulously.
Myrtle berries are placed in an infuser and generously covered with alcohol without regard for costs but rather as a tribute to a cherished recipe born out of lived history.
