Fonni

Fonni, a charming city located 1000 meters above sea level, stands as the highest city in Sardinia. This picturesque destination is not only a hub for pastoral economy but also a hidden gem nestled on the island.

Similar to other mountainous settlements in Sardinia, Fonni is structured around compact neighborhood clusters. These clusters date back to different historic periods, featuring quaint stone houses of one or two floors. In the oldest and most well-preserved neighborhoods, you can admire wooden shingle roofs known as «escandulas.»

The oldest core of Fonni seems to have emerged around the church of S. Giovanni Battista during the early Middle Ages. Over time, districts like Ghinio and Su Piggiu evolved along the mountain ridge descending towards the northeast.

Another significant nucleus took shape in the 17th century around a Franciscan convent and church. The active presence of friars played a pivotal role in Fonni’s development, making it a prominent center within the Barbà sopp centiantaiando region.

Thanks to its elevation, Fonni boasts being Sardinia’s exclusive skiing destination with ski lifts reaching peaks like Spada and Bruncu Spina standing tall at over 1800 meters.

  • The town’s alleys are adorned with beautiful murals depicting scenes of village life and agricultural work.
  • Among Fonni’s architectural gems worth visiting are the late Gothic-style Basilica of San Giovanni and the Virgin of Martyrs church.

The land beneath Fonni’s feet has seen inhabitants from pre-Nuragic times through Nuragic civilization (evidenced by giant tombs and nuraghi) up to Roman occupation when the Sarabensis mansio was established.
